The event has a unique format. There are no “predetermined” speakers; any participant can host a session to present about their work, their research, or initiate a discussion about key issues.
Our proposition is to create a convening space for uncommon conversations that deepen understanding between various stakeholders all engaged in work related to biometrics. The event itself uses Open Space Technology, with agenda-setting taking place in the opening circle. This feature of the event is critical: that anyone who participates can place topics on the agenda.
More about this generative and engaging format can be found here.
As participants register, they respond to the following prompts, which gives a sense of our potential topics:
What are your concerns about the implementation of biometric technology?
What questions or concerns do you have that you hope members of a different constituency could answer?

As participants register, they respond to the following prompts, which gives a sense of our potential topics:
What are your concerns about the implementation of biometric technology?
- Potential impacts of restricting the use or sharing of biometrics
- Disparities in access to programs from government/NGO
- Privacy and security
- Implications and terms & conditions around capture of biometrics during the use of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality
- Legislation
- Implications of age-appropriate design codes, the requirements created around ID, and the potential for biometric age verification
- Unlimited surveillance by corporations who buy and sell data for use in targeting people
- Too many differing opinions on how biometrics are and should be used
- Digital Twins replication without agency
- Bias with human (face-to-face) facial biometric verification vs. current top algorithms
- Individual freedom and human rights
- Concerns are that our biometrics can be abused and we can secure our DID with Zero Knowledge technologies, and we should decentralize this technology.
- Negative effects on identity and autonomy and potential corruption of supplier tech platforms
- That "the cat is already out of the bag."
- What is the real risk of a biometric template in printed on documents (for example, on the Indian PAN card or in other cases)
- Creating a market for it
- Fundamental rights violations. e.g., surveillance
- Security and safety of personal data
- Accuracy, privacy and misuse
What questions or concerns do you have that you hope members of a different constituency could answer?
- Immigration concerns with biometrics (exclusion/detection)
- What are the benefits TO people of allowing biometric surveillance when so many systems are designed to discriminate against women & BIPOC members?
- I'm generally interested in learning more about other biometric technologies, and how to find opportunities for collaboration.
- Implementation details
- Challenges with liveness detection during remote verification
- How mobile Driver's Licenses have the potential to allow privacy preserving on-device facial verification, and what needs to be done to encourage and utilize that application
- Enumeration of the current repositories along with attributes such as whether they are accessible by government, commercial, consumer, or DIY entities
- Share and exchange experiences in using the technology and thoughts on 'governance' (use/misuse)
- What are some of the cutting edge technologies or methods for securing biometric information from bad actors, especially in areas where critical infrastructure is lacking or outdated
- I would like to hear different perspectives and opinions including novel techniques to preserve privacy
- As a NIST NVLAP testing lab, we are mainly curious to hear the discussion and see how it may affect biometric testing in the future.
- Does palm vein technology work effectively in African or southern Indian for 1:1 verification and is it a real improvement over other contact-free modalities?
- Why are we talking about biometrics as if is a future thing when it's already happened?
- How can we preserve autonomy over personal identity?
- How can we ensure anonymity where required? How will biometrics apply to virtual reality/metaverse?
- How do we connect virtual and physical reality with biometrics, if indeed we want to?
- Can society, businesses and government be open to decentralising the power of DID using Zero Knowledge Proofs, giving this immense power to the people for the greater good of democracy?
- How to achieve decentralized digital identity and still use biometric identifiers?
What topics or questions are you interested in:
- How are biometrics used today?
- What are future scenarios of biometrics use?
- What is the history of biometrics and their use?
- Sharing of case studies and research about surveillance from civil society groups like AccessNow and The Engine Room.
- What are legitimate uses of the technology?
- What types of biometric usage are inappropriate?
- What are the differences between differing biometric modalities?
- Potential Impacts of restricting the use or sharing of biometrics.
- Bias with human (face-to-face) facial biometric verification vs. the current top algorithms.
- Challenges with liveness detection during remote verification.
- How can agencies gather and share information on false positives vs false negatives when using facial biometric verification?
- How can mobile Driver's Licenses have the potential to allow privacy preserving on-device facial verification, and what needs to be done to encourage and utilize that application?
- Countermeasures to passively collected biometrics.
- Use of privacy enhancing technologies to reduce risk associated with biometric databases?
